If you are making this booking on behalf of a group, it is your responsibility to make all users aware of the terms and conditions and to practice safe sauna use.
All persons using the Sauna do so at their own risk. Risks include bodily injury and possibly death. If you have any reservations about using the sauna, such as medical conditions, underlying health problems (including low or high blood pressure, heart/cardiac issues), the use of prescription drugs and/or pregnancy, it is essential that you consult your GP before making a booking or using the sauna. If in any doubt, you should not use the sauna.
All persons using the open water (e.g. sea, lake, river) or plunge pool as a ‘cold plunge’ do so at their own risk. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you are able to withstand exposure to cold temperatures and are a capable swimmer in open water.
The changing area and storage box can be used to store personal belongings during your sauna session but all persons do so at their own risk. Skellig Sauna accepts no responsibility or liability for missing, lost or stolen possessions.
Alcohol, smoking and food are not permitted in the Sauna. Do not drink alcohol before or whilst using the sauna as this can possibly lower blood pressure causing dizziness, fainting and also dehydration.
Nudity is not permitted in the sauna or public areas such as the beach. Swimwear must be worn at all times.
Important note for Glasses-wearers. Some types of lenses can be irreversibly damaged by the heat in the sauna. If in any doubt, check with your optician or try using contact lenses instead. Skellig Sauna accepts no responsibility or liability for any damage to glasses that may occur.
Jewellery should be removed before entering the Sauna to prevent burning. Ensure your swimsuit does not contain any slimming panels or metal parts which may heat up and possibly burn skin.
All persons who choose to swim in the sea do so at their own risk and are responsible for assessing their own ability and the prevailing conditions. Sea conditions can change rapidly and may include waves, tides, currents, rip currents, swell, weather conditions and other hazards. We do not promote or encourage sea swimming in darkness, and customers should not enter the sea where conditions are considered unsafe.
Anyone under the age of 16 are not permitted to use the sauna for safety reasons.
Our wood-fired stoves, flues and associated components become extremely hot during use and may cause serious burns. Customers must not touch, move or interfere with the stove or flue and must follow all safety instructions provided by us.
The Skellig Sauna operators reserve the right to refuse admission to intoxicated persons or for other reasons that may be deemed a health and safety risk. Refunds will not be offered to anyone refused admission.
Sauna etiquette must be adhered to at all times. This includes:
Spend no more than 15 minutes in the sauna at any one time. Leave the Sauna immediately if you start to feel uncomfortable, dizzy, nauseous, or lightheaded. Take care and move slowly as you exit. Use the sand-timer provided inside the Sauna to keep track of how much time you have spent in each session. It is recommended to keep sessions to 5-15 minutes sessions but it is ok to leave the Sauna sooner if you start to feel uncomfortable
Do not put anything on the sauna rocks/stones other than the water in the bucket provided, as this can damage the stove. You will be responsible to pay for any damages caused due to such action. If the bucket is empty please inform the Skellig Sauna operator. Follow operators’ instructions on how to gently drizzle water onto the hot rocks. Use the ladle provided to ensure that your arm stays away from the stove and the hot steam that will arise. Only pour the ‘sauna water’ (provided in the bucket inside the Sauna) on the hot rocks and nothing else. This should only be done intermittently to ensure the temperature does not increase too quickly and only when all users are seated.
Entering and exiting the Sauna in a safe and careful manner. Move slowly and give other users space to move. The Sauna is accessed via steps and through a small changing area and the floor inside the Sauna can become slippery.
Never touch the stove or open the stove door. Only trained members of staff are permitted to operate the stove and will be nearby for any queries. There is a guard between the benches and the stove. Do not hang towels or clothes to dry in the Sauna, as this may cause a risk of fire.
Keeping access points clear to allow other users to exit safely and swiftly if needed.
Respect other Sauna users. Check with the other Sauna users before pouring water on the rocks as this will produce hot steam and increase the humidity in the Sauna.
To prevent your body from dehydration, drink plenty of cool water—between 2 to 4 glasses—after leaving the Sauna. Please bring sufficient drinking water with you.
Never drink alcoholic beverages. Drinking alcohol can possibly lower blood pressure and cause dizziness and also cause dehydration.
Do not eat just before you use the Sauna or eat inside the Sauna as you could become nauseated.
Bring a clean towel to sit on inside the Sauna. This helps to protect your skin.
Do not use any oils or creams inside our saunas as these can damage the benches and increase risk of slipping inside the sauna. You will be responsible to pay for any damages caused due to such action. In addition, using creams and lotions prior to using the Sauna can clog up your pores and prevent your skin from sweating efficiently.
Protect your head and hair with a towel or sauna hat. The hat helps to keep the head cool and protect hair from the intense heat that can dry out the hair shafts, causing hair to be brittle and possibly break off.
After leaving the Sauna, take time to cool down in the open air or in water (sea, lake, river, plunge pool). Alternate between the hot and cold to get the most out of a sauna experience. All persons using the open water or plunge pool as a ‘cold plunge’ do so at their own risk.
It is recommended to rest for at least ten minutes after finishing your sauna session.
Find a cool place where you can sit still. This will give your body some time to rebalance and for your heart rate to slow down.
At all times, a trained operator of Skellig Sauna will be nearby for any queries and support you may need managing the heat and the water on the rocks. If anything is wrong, please inform us immediately.
